Green driving and location-based idling or emissions fees

How to Reduce Emissions Using Skymeter

Skymeter enables three types of direct emissions reductions strategies: green driving, idling fees and emissions fees. Many of the other pay-per-use applications of Skymeter also have large indirect environmental benefits (all pay-per-use impacts use).

Green Driving

In green driving, if a driver's behavior (e.g., accelerates too rapidly) burns too much fuel they can be notified via a gentle series of warning beeps or visual display. This policy can be implemented on a voluntary basis, and is of special interest to fleet owners since it reduces fuel costs.

Skymeter offers green driving as one feature among many in its metering service. This provides a significant cost benefit relative to single-purpose green driving systems. So long as Skymeter's privacy protection features are known and stressed, this makes it much more attractive to drivers. A Skymeter green driving system can also include features like automatic parking payment, and usage-based insurance at no added cost.

Idling Fees

Location-based idling fees can be implemented. Skymeter is able to differentiate between vehicles that are parked, idling, or stuck in traffic. Taxis, limousines or other commercial vehicles that keep their engines running while standing in place can be assessed idling fees when they do this within the city boundaries, on public property, or however else rules get set.

Emissions Fees

Skymeter can calculate the total emissions of a vehicle (with or without plugging into the OBD2 port) and determine what cities or jurisdictions the emissions happened within. Some jurisdictions may wish to use Skymeter to gather anonymous aggregate emissions data as a side benefit of, e.g., a Skymeter parking service running in their city.

Other municipalities may wish to put in a direct carbon tax on vehicles within its boundaries - without waiting for national legislation. This could be charged as a flat daily usage fee on visitors and non-metered cars, be metered voluntarily on private cars, and be mandatory for commercial vehicles. Or all vehicles could pay per gram of carbon or other pollution emitted within city limits, with added costs for polluting, e.g., near schoolyards.
