Better manage and/or regulate fleets.

Fleet Management Companies:

Skymeter serves firms that need fleet data, often to reduce their financial risk, while maintaining location privacy. For instance, an employer may want to know data from company cars while allowing employees to keep their locations private. Skymeter does not offer a fleet tracking service; instead its hardware integrates with other fleet tracking systems. This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. With a Skymeter-monitored fleet, the owner of the vehicles has many possibilities, including:

• get aggregate reports on fleet use.
• prepare full environmental and emissions reports (by location).
• teach green driving and cut down on idling, reducing fuel consumption.
• run employee parking cash-outs: paying employees that leave their car at home.
• accurately price insurance, based on how and how much a car is driven.
• tailor maintenance schedules to real time data on the amount and style of vehicle use.
• optimize the resale value of a vehicle based on good data and good maintenance.

Controlled Access and Security:

Skymeter provides financial-grade data for applications that have the potential to involve liability, such as controlled access uses. For instance, a city may want to regulate the roads used by certain trucks, including hazardous goods vehicles, by imposing fines for unapproved access. Cities or regions may even wish to be paid per mile (or km) to allow, e.g., long-distance garbage hauling vehicles to use their roads.

In a secure facility, such as a port, Skymeter can maintain security by flagging any truck that approaches a secured zone, while allowing law-abiding drivers to maintain their privacy. Parking and access fees for use of a facility can also be imposed using Skymeter. This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Manage Deliveries:

Delivery trucks blocking busy streets is a major cause of traffic disruptions and jams. Attempts to control this via ticketing can be ineffective as delivery firms challenge all tickets in court. Ticketing is also an uncontrollable cost of doing business for courier firms. With Skymeter, delivery firms can pay per minute for blocking main roads or bike lanes during peak hours. Should the delivery firm choose to park off-street, rates can adjust accordingly. This results in a predictable cost of doing business for delivery firms - that can even be passed on to customers in the form of a drop charge - and better traffic flow for the city. More rigorous ticketing policies can then be justified by the fact that delivery firms have the option of subscribing to a fairer, Skymeter-enabled system where they pay the city based on usage.

Taxi Licensing and Metering:

Today taxi owners pay a flat fee to the city for their medallion or license, and operate their taxis 24/7. There are always the same number of taxis available, although passenger demand varies up and down. With Skymeter, taxis licenses could be paid based on usage: per hour and per km on city streets. Drivers could even receive a credit for their trip home and back and only pay for actual working time. This system would benefit:

drivers: rather than being forced to pay for 12 hours, they could work fewer hours
owners: they can pay the city only for hours used (and switch to usage-based insurance) linking costs to use
passengers: taxi supply can vary up and down to meet demand
the city: taxi service meets demand; pricing can be used to affect taxi parking vs. idling vs. cruising, impacting traffic

Skymeter can also be the basis of an improved taxi meter. Existing meters access the car computer to count wheel rotations. Distance can vary by 4% or more between cars, based on variance in tire size/inflation at the moment of testing. Skymeter measures distance traveled to better than 1%, without accessing the car computer, and ensures the passenger is never overcharged. A Skymeter-powered taxi meter could also automatically include time-of-day charges and fare class zones. This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Bus Arrival Times and Other:

Skymeter's improved GPS positions are of interest in some applications, such as calculating bus arrival times in dense urban cores. If you have an application where the position errors of existing GPS systems are a concern, This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .
