In-car metering transforms the experience
and economics of parking.
How the Parking Service Works
Park, then drive off. With the Skymeter service, all parking is automatically recorded for billing at the end of the month. Paying for parking becomes as easy as paying for your mobile phone. You just use it.
Skymeter works everywhere: on streets, in small private lots or in large lots. You may operate a multi-story parking garage, or just sell the space on your driveway while you’re at work. Even underground parking can be captured, since Skymeter recognizes where the car disappeared underground, how long it stopped for, and where it reappeared. Skymeter’s in-car meter can also activate parking gates.
Parking operators can collect from Skymeter-enabled drivers by simply (1) registering their lot, (2) posting their rules and rates and (3) doing random enforcement. It’s that easy!!
Who Operates the Parking Service?
Parking service operators market the service, distribute meters, bill and do customer service; they also contract with municipalities and lot owners to agree to collect parking on their behalf. Skymeter provides a metering service to these firms. Pay-by-cellphone parking companies, parking operators and telcos all have the required skills and staff.
Who Benefits from Skymeter-Enabled Parking?
For drivers, Skymeter is the ultimate in convenience: you do nothing. No searching for coins, walking back and forth to payment stations
(in the rain or snow), or worrying about a parking ticket because you forgot or your meeting went over. Your parking is paid.
Operators can be the first to offer convenient, next-generation parking, building their customer base and enhancing loyalty. Having the latest technology can also help win contracts with municipalities.
Enforcement can be simplified. One of Skymeter's three enforcement mechanisms is automatic: driving by in a vehicle.
Officers only need to stop to ticket.
Parking owners benefit since Skymeter-enabled cars pay automatically for every minute of parking they use. Payment is non-cash, minimizing theft. Since all it requires is training the enforcement team, and accepting payment, there is little cost to starting.
Advanced benefits include the potential for new revenue/business models that optimize revenue, make spaces available, and increase customer satisfaction. With a full commitment to Skymeter, combined with pay-by-cellphone parking, parking meters can go the way of payphone booths. This would minimize operating costs, allowing owners to keep >90% of the gross parking revenues as profits. Massive amounts of parking data, such as real time occupancy rates, also become possibilities.
Examples of Pay-Per-Use Parking Services
Because Skymeter is an automatic, always-on, individual parking service,
parking rules can be complex. They can vary by type of driver, vehicle, and length and time of stay. Rewards can even be given, and loyalty programs can be set up. For instance:
• rates can vary by driver type: customers park free, employees pay a reduced rate, commuters pay full rate
• rates can vary by type of vehicle: electric cars, carpooling cars, and light trucks
can all pay different rates to park
• rates can change by length of stay: a convenience store may charge $5/hr, but stays
of less than 15 minutes are free
• parking refunds, rewards or bonuses can be offered: an employer can offer $5 in cash each day an employee leaves their car at home (and nothing if they park instead in a
mall around the corner)
• parking loyalty programs can be set up, with all the complexity and benefits
such plans bring.
